STATUTORY RULES AND ORDERS. 1938. No. 321.

DEAD TURKEYS (PACKING FOR EXPORT) REGULATIONS, 1938.

WHEREAS it is enacted by subsection (1) of section 44 of the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Act, 1930 (No. 10 of 1930), that the Minister for Agriculture may by order make regulations in regard to all or any of the following matters, that is to say:—

(a) the method and manner in all respects of packing dead poultry, including the materials and packages to be used for such packing,

(b) the cleanliness and sterilisation of such materials and packages,

(c) the limit of weight of any one package of dead poultry:

NOW, THEREFORE, I SÉAMAS O RIAIN, Minister for Agriculture, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (1) of section 44 of the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Act, 1930 (No. 10 of 1930), and of every and any other power me in this behalf enabling, do hereby order and make the following regulations, that is to say:—

1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Dead Turkeys (Packing for Export) Regulations, 1938.

(2) These Regulations shall come into operation on the 5th day of December, 1938.

2. —The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to these Regulations.

3. —In these Regulations—

the expression "No. 1 Standard Case" means a case constructed in accordance with the specifications contained in Parts I and III of the First Schedule hereto;

the expression "No. 2 Standard Case" means a case constructed in accordance with the specifications contained in Parts II and III of the First Schedule hereto;

the expression "Standard Case" means a case which is either a No. 1 Standard Case or a No. 2 Standard Case;

the word "turkeys" means dead turkeys intended for export.

4. —These Regulations shall not apply to any consignment consisting of less than seven turkeys or to any consignment containing turkeys reared on the exporter's farm and no other turkeys.

5. —All turkeys shall be packed in Standard Cases.

6. —Each Standard Case shall be lined with strong parchment paper and the head of each turkey shall be wrapped separately in parchment paper. Turkeys shall be packed breast upwards in two rows with the heads turned towards the side of the Standard Case. Should the packing of the turkeys be not firm a roll of wood wool wrapped in parchment paper shall be used to prevent movement of the turkeys in the course of transit.

7. —Turkeys differing by more than 2 lb. in weight shall not be packed in the same Standard Case.

8. —Cock turkeys and hen turkeys shall not be packed in the same Standard Case.

9. —(1) The number of turkeys packed in a No. 1 Standard Case shall not exceed—

(a) eight turkeys weighing 14 lb. to 16 lb. each, or

(b) six turkeys weighing 16 lb. to 18 lb. each, or

(c) four turkeys weighing 18 lb. and over each.

(2) The number of turkeys packed in a No. 2 Standard Case shall not exceed—

(a) sixteen turkeys weighing less than 8 lb. each, or

(b) twelve turkeys weighing 8 lb. to 10 lb. each, or

(c) ten turkeys weighing 10 lb. to 12 lb. each, or

(d) eight turkeys weighing 12 lb. to 14 lb. each.

10.—Each Standard Case containing turkeys shall have stencilled thereon in letters or numbers, of one and a quarter inches in dimension, the particulars appropriate to the contents thereof mentioned in the second column of the Second Schedule hereto opposite each reference number in the said Schedule and the particulars so mentioned opposite any such reference number shall be stencilled in the position on such Standard Case mentioned in the third column of the said Schedule opposite that reference number.

11.—Every Standard Case, shall, after it is closed, be securely double-wired or double-strapped with steel wire or strip.

FIRST SCHEDULE.

PART III.

Corner Posts.

Corner posts 2" square, cut diagonally, and extending the full internal depth, shall be used in the construction of each case

Spacing between boards.

Spacing between the boards shall nowhere exceed 1".

Timber.

The timber shall be well seasoned, clean, dry, free from bark, wane, and feather, large knots and discoloration.
