COINAGE (DIMENSIONS AND DESIGNS) REGULATIONS, 1969.

I, CHARLES J. HAUGHEY, Minister for Finance, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 (6) of the Decimal Currency Act, 1969 (No. 23 of 1969), hereby make the following regulations :

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Coinage (Dimensions and Designs) Regulations, 1969.

2. In these Regulations " coin " means a coin to be provided under section 3 (1) of the Decimal Currency Act, 1969 (No. 23 of 1969).

3. (1) Subject to subparagraph (2) of this paragraph, coins shall be circular in shape.

(2) A coin of the denomination of fifty new pence shall be in the shape of an equilateral curve heptagon.

4. The diameter of a coin shall be as specified in the First Schedule to these Regulations.

5. A coin shall have for the obverse impression a harp, together with the inscription " Éire " and the date of the year, and the reverse impression shall be as specified in the Second Schedule to these Regulations.

6. (1) Subject to subparagraph (2) of this paragraph, coins shall have a plain edge.

(2) A coin of the denomination of ten new pence or five new pence shall have a graining upon the edge.

An adaptation of a detail of an ornamental bird from an illumination in the Second Bible of Charles-the-Bald in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and the inscription " 2p ".

New penny

An adaptation of a detail of an ornamental bird from an illumination in the Book of Kells in Trinity College, Dublin, and the inscription " 1p ".

New halfpenny

An adaptation of a detail of an ornamental bird from an illumination in a manuscript (Ms. 213) in the Cathedral Library, Cologne (Collectio Canonum); and the inscription " ½p ".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations prescribe the dimensions and designs of six denominations of coins which are to be provided under the Decimal Currency Act, 1969 (No. 23 of 1969).
