HEALTH (COLOURING AGENTS IN FOOD) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1978

The Minister for Health in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 5 , 54 and 59 of the Health Act, 1947 (No. 28 of 1947), sub-section (3) of section 38 of the Health Act, 1953 (No. 26 of 1953) and section 6 of the Health Act, 1970 (No. 1 of 1970) after consultation with the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy and the Minister for Agriculture hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Health (Colouring Agents in Food) (Amendment) Regulations, 1978.

2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of June 1978.

3. The First schedule to the Health (Colouring Agents in Food) Regulations, 1973 ( S.I. No. 149 of 1973 ) is hereby amended by:—

(i) the deletion of the substances listed in the Schedule to these Regulations from Part I of the said First Schedule, and

(ii) the deletion of the specific purity criteria in respect of the colouring agents bearing serial numbers E105, E152 and E181 and Orange RN from Part III of the said First Schedule.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Regulations amend the Health (Colouring Agents in Food) Regulations, 1973 ( S.I. No. 149 of 1973 ) by the deletion of six colouring agents—E105 Fast Yellow AB, E121 Orchil or Orcein, E130 Solanthrene Blue RS or Anthragen Blue or Indanthrene Blue, E152 Black 7984, E181 Burnt Umber and Orange RN—from the list of colouring agents permitted for use in or on food.

The Regulations implement Directive No. 76/399/E.E.C. of 6 April, 1976.

The Regulations come into operation on 1st June, 1978.
