MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS (TERMINATION OF AGREEMENT) ORDER, 1979. | ||
The Minister for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 68 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 (No. 4 of 1978) and pursuant to an agreement made between the Government and the Government of the United Kingdom hereby orders as follows:— 1. This Order may be cited as the Medical Practitioners (Termination of Agreement) Order, 1979. 2. The agreement specified in the First Schedule to the Medical Practitioners Act, 1927 (No. 25 of 1927) as to the registration and control of medical practitioners shall cease to have effect as from the 30th day of April, 1979. 3. Notwithstanding the termination of the said agreement a person, other than a national of a Member State of the European Economic Community, who before the 31st day of December, 1985 is awarded a medical qualification in the United Kingdom which, had the Agreement not been terminated, would have entitled him to have his name entered in the register of medical practitioners maintained under the Medical Practitioners Act 1927 , shall subject to the provision of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 , be entitled to have his name entered in the register maintained under that Act. | ||

EXPLANATORY NOTE. | ||
The effect of this order is to terminate on 30th April 1979 an agreement made in 1927 between this country and the United Kingdom for the mutual recognition of medical qualifications and for certain ancillary matters. Mutual recognition of medical qualifications is now provided for nationals of Member States under directives adopted by the Council of the European Communities. The existing rights of nationals of countries outside the EEC who have been awarded medical qualifications in the United Kingdom before the termination of the agreement and who apply for registration in this country are preserved under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 and the rights of such nationals who commenced medical training in the United Kingdom before the termination of the agreement are preserved under the terms of this Order. |
