I, SEAN SHERLOCK, Minister of State at the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 5(1) and 7(6) (inserted by section 4 of the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) (Amendment) Act 2013 (No. 36 of 2013)) of the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) Act 2003 (No. 30 of 2003), and the Enterprise, Trade and Innovation (Delegation of Ministerial Functions) (No. 4) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 241 of 2011 ) (as adapted by the Enterprise, Trade and Innovation (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 245 of 2011 ), hereby make the following regulations: | ||
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) (Strategic Areas of Opportunity) Regulations 2013. | ||
2. The following areas of opportunity related to science or technology are prescribed for the purposes of section 7(6) (inserted by section 4 of the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) (Amendment) Act 2013 (No. 36 of 2013)) of the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) Act 2003 (No. 30 of 2003) | ||
— Future Networks and Communications; | ||
— Data Analytics, Management, Security and Privacy; | ||
— Digital Platforms, Content and Applications; | ||
— Connected Health and Independent Living; | ||
— Medical Devices; | ||
— Diagnostics; | ||
— Therapeutics: Synthesis, Formulation, Processing and Drug Delivery; | ||
— Food for Health; | ||
— Sustainable Food Production and Processing; | ||
— Marine Renewable Energy; | ||
— Smart Grids and Smart Cities; | ||
— Manufacturing Competitiveness; | ||
— Processing Technologies and Novel Materials; | ||
— Innovation in Services and Business Processes and | ||
— Platform Science and Technology, comprising basic biomedical science, nanotechnology, advanced materials, microelectronics, photonics and software engineering. | ||

These regulations prescribe as strategic areas of opportunity the research priority areas identified by the Research Priority Steering Group and approved by Government in March 2012. The priority areas identified are shown to demonstrate the greatest opportunity in terms of delivering sustainable economic return through their contribution to enterprise development, employment growth, job retention and tangible improvements in quality of life. |
