S.I. No. 618/2024 - Road Traffic (Signs) (Speed limits) Regulations 2024

Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 8th November, 2024.

I, EAMON RYAN, Minister for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 95 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) (as adapted by the Transport, Tourism and Sport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2020 ( S.I. No. 351 of 2020 )), hereby make the following regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Speed limits) Regulations 2024.

2. These Regulations come into operation on 7 February 2025.

3. The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2024 ( S.I. No. 200 of 2024 ) are amended—

(a) in Regulation 29, by substituting for paragraphs (4) and (5) the following:

“(4) An alternative design for speed limit sign number RUS 042 set out in Part 1 of Schedule 3 may be provided to indicate—

(a) in respect of a local road, the local roads speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour, or

(b) where special speed limit bye-laws specify the special speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour in respect of a local road or part of a local road in a built-up area, that special speed limit.

(5) The alternative design for speed limit sign RUS 042 referred to in paragraph (4) consists of a white disc with a black border displaying diagonal parallel lines in black, the dimensions and design of which are set out in Part 1 of Schedule 3.”,

and

(b) in Schedule 3, by substituting for Part 1 the following:

“Part 1

General Speed Limit Signs

Regulation 29(1), (2) and (5)

RUS 039: 120km/h Speed Limit

RUS 041: 80km/h Speed Limit

RUS 042: Alternative Design

RUS 064: 40km/h Speed Limit

RUS 065: 20km/h Speed Limit

RUS 040: 100km/h Speed Limit

RUS 042: 60km/h Speed Limit

RUS 043: 50km/h Speed Limit

RUS 044: 30km/h Speed Limit

Note:

1. The dimensions shown for the above traffic signs are as follows:

The dimensions shown are in millimetres. The standard dimension for the diameter of each sign is shown and the range of alternative dimensions which may be used are shown in brackets.

2. Except for traffic sign number RUS 064, where it is desired to repeat the speed limit along the length of a road, part, carriageway or lane to which the speed limit applies, the diameter of the sign may be reduced to 900 millimetres, 750 millimetres, 600 millimetres, 450 millimetres or 300 millimetres. Where it is desired to repeat traffic sign number RUS 064 along the length of a road, part carriageway or lane to which the speed limit applies, the diameter of the sign may be reduced to 450 millimetres or 300 millimetres.

3. A speed limit sign can be mounted on its own or on a backing board or as part of a larger traffic sign or in combination with other regulatory, warning or information traffic signs.

4. An alternative design for speed limit sign number RUS 042 may be provided to indicate—

(a) in respect of a local road, the local roads speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour, or

(b) where special speed limit bye-laws specify the special speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour in respect of a local road or part of a local road in a built-up area, that special speed limit.

5. Speed limit sign number RUS 065 may be mounted on its own or, on a grey backing board as part of a larger traffic sign in combination with appropriate warning or information traffic signs.”.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2024 to designate the alternative design previously used for RUS 041 (80 kilometres per hour) as an alternative design for RUS 042 (60 kilometres per hour).
