MARRIAGE LAW (IRELAND) AMENDMENT ACT 1873

CHAPTER XVI.

An Act to amend the Law relating to Marriages in Ireland in certain cases.[2] [15th May 1873.]

[Preamble recites doubts whether 26 & 27 Vict. c. 27 extends to places of public worship used by any church or religious community who are not Roman Catholics and who do not describe themselves as Protestants.]

Extension of provisions of 26 & 27 Vict. c. 27. and 7 & 8 Vict. c. 81.

1. All the provisions of the said Act relating to the registration of places of public worship shall be deemed to extend and apply to places of public worship used by any such church or religious community as aforesaid; and all the provisions of the said Act, and of the Marriages (Ireland) Act, 1844, and of the Acts amending and extending the said Acts or either of them, relating to marriages between persons one or both of whom shall belong to any church, denomination, or body of Protestant Christians, so far as the same are now in force and applicable, shall be deemed to extend and shall extend and apply to marriages between persons one or both of whom shall belong to any such church or religious community as aforesaid.

2. Any marriage heretofore solemnized between members of any such church or religious community as aforesaid which would have been legal and valid had the parties to such marriage been Protestant Episcopalians within the meaning of the Matrimonial Causes and Marriage Law (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1870, shall be and be deemed valid to all intents and purposes, notwithstanding that such parties were not Protestant Episcopalians at the time of such marriage.

Short title.

3. This Act may be cited for all purposes as “The Marriage Law (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1873”; and the Marriage Law (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1863, and this Act may be cited together for all purposes as “The Marriage Law (Ireland) Amendment Acts, 1863 and 1873.”

Construction of Act.

4. This Act and the Marriage Law (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1863, so far as the same is not inconsistent with this Act, shall be construed together as one Act.
